Is a chipped tooth a dental emergency? When to call right away

A chipped tooth is a dental emergency when there's pain, bleeding, visible pink pulp in the center, or a large piece broken off. Small, painless enamel chips can wait a few days but still need professional repair. If you're in Aloha, Beaverton, or Hillsboro, call Line Dental at (503) 259-8641 to describe the chip. We'll triage same-day care.
At Line Dental Aloha, we hear this question almost weekly. A kid takes a fastball to the mouth at a Beaverton School District game. A parent bites into a crusty baguette on the drive home from Hillsboro. The first instinct is to panic. The second is to wonder if it can wait until morning.
Sometimes it can. Sometimes it absolutely cannot. Here's how to tell.
Is every chipped tooth a dental emergency?
No. Not every chip needs a 9 PM phone call. The question is what layer of the tooth is exposed.
Teeth have three layers. Enamel is the hard outer shell. Dentin is the yellower middle layer. Pulp is the soft center where nerves and blood vessels live. A chip that only nicks the enamel is usually a cosmetic concern. A chip that reaches dentin or pulp is a different story. According to the ADA, chipped and fractured teeth are among the most common dental injuries, often caused by sports, falls, or biting hard objects, and severity varies widely.
Three red flags tell us a chip is urgent: pain, bleeding from the tooth itself, and sensitivity to air or water. If you have any of those, call us same-day.
When a chipped tooth IS an emergency
Pick up the phone if you notice any of the following.
A pink or red dot in the center of the break. That's exposed pulp. The American Association of Endodontists notes that exposed pulp from a fracture can lead to infection and may require root canal therapy.
Sharp pain when you breathe in or sip water. Cold air hitting dentin is a clear signal the inner tooth is exposed.
A large piece broken off with bleeding gum tissue around it. This often means the fracture extends below the gumline.
A chip on a front tooth that changes your bite or speech. If your teeth no longer meet the way they used to, see us today.
Any chip after a face or jaw injury. Trauma can hide cracks deeper than the visible chip.
When in doubt, call. That's the whole trick.
When a chip can wait a few days
Most tiny enamel chips are not emergencies. You can usually wait until our next open appointment if:
The chip is small and feels smooth to the tongue.
There's no pain, sensitivity, or color change.
No sharp edge is cutting your lip or tongue.
The tooth still looks white throughout, not gray or pink.
Still book within a week. A rough edge collects plaque. A small chip can spread into a bigger fracture under chewing pressure. We'd rather smooth and bond it now than rebuild a crown later.
What to do in the first hour after chipping a tooth
The first 60 minutes matter. Here's a calm checklist.
Rinse your mouth gently with warm water. Clear out any debris.
Save the broken piece. If you can find the fragment, store it in milk or saliva. AAE guidelines on traumatic dental injuries recommend milk because it preserves the cells better than water and gives us a chance at reattachment.
Apply a cold compress to the outside of the cheek. Ten minutes on, ten off. This calms swelling.
Cover a sharp edge. A small piece of sugar-free gum or orthodontic wax pressed over the rough spot protects your tongue and lip on the drive in.
Take an over-the-counter pain reliever as directed. Ibuprofen works well for dental pain if you can take it.
Call us. Describe the size, location, color, and any pain. We'll decide together if you need to come in today.
Last spring a dad in Aloha called us from the parking lot at his daughter's softball game. She'd taken a line drive to the chin and chipped her upper front tooth. He found the piece in the grass and dropped it in a paper cup of milk from the snack bar. We saw her within the hour. The bonding looked seamless within the same visit.
How dentists repair a chipped tooth
Treatment depends on the size and depth of the break. We choose the least invasive option that will hold.
Dental bonding for small to medium chips. The ADA notes that bonding uses tooth-colored composite resin and can typically be completed in a single visit. It's affordable and looks natural.
Porcelain veneers for cosmetic front-tooth chips, especially if the tooth already had wear or discoloration you'd like to address at the same time.
A crown when too much tooth structure is gone for bonding to hold.
Root canal therapy if the pulp is exposed or has become infected. The tooth is usually saved and crowned afterward.
Preventing chipped teeth, especially for active families
Most of the chips we see in our office trace back to a handful of habits. Many are preventable.
Custom mouthguards for student athletes. The ADA confirms that a custom-fitted mouthguard helps prevent dental injuries during sports. We make these for Aloha High School athletes and Beaverton School District kids regularly. They fit better than boil-and-bite versions and stay put during contact.
Skip the ice and popcorn kernels. Hard objects are the top cause of chipped molars in adults.
Address nighttime grinding. If you wake up with a sore jaw, a night guard can save you years of fractures.
Keep regular checkups. We can spot weak enamel, old fillings, and hairline cracks before they snap.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can a chipped tooth heal on its own?
No. Enamel does not regrow. Even a tiny chip is permanent until a dentist repairs it. The good news is that small chips can often be smoothed or bonded in a single visit and look like nothing ever happened.
How much does it cost to fix a chipped tooth in Oregon?
Costs vary by treatment. Bonding for a small chip is typically the most affordable option. Veneers and crowns cost more because they cover more of the tooth. Most PPO dental insurance plans help with restorative repairs. We verify your benefits before any treatment starts.
Will my chipped tooth turn gray?
Sometimes. If the pulp was damaged by the impact, the tooth can darken over weeks or months as the nerve dies. Any color change after a chip is a reason to come in. We can usually save the tooth with a root canal and restore the natural shade.
Can I still eat with a chipped tooth?
Yes, but eat carefully on the opposite side and stick to soft foods until you're seen. Avoid very hot or cold drinks if the tooth is sensitive. Skip sticky candy and crunchy snacks that could enlarge the break.
How long do I have to fix a chipped tooth before it gets worse?
For a painless enamel chip, a week is usually safe. For anything painful, bleeding, or showing pink in the center, see a dentist the same day. The longer pulp stays exposed, the higher the chance of infection and root canal treatment.
