Sour and acidic foods create a very specific kind of stimulus. According to the hydrodynamic theory of dentin sensitivity, first described by Brännström in peer-reviewed dental research, acid causes fluid inside the microscopic tubules of your dentin to shift, which triggers the nerve underneath. It's a different signal than cold, which usually points to the pulp, or pressure pain, which usually points to a crack loading under bite force.

That narrows the list. It's often enamel erosion, an early cavity that hasn't cavitated yet, an exposed root surface near the gumline, or a hairline crack that lets acid seep down into living tooth tissue.

Which acidic foods and drinks most commonly trigger it?

The critical pH at which enamel begins to dissolve is around 5.5, based on decades of cariology research cited by the ADA. A lot of the drinks people consider healthy sit far below that number.

  • Lemon, lime, and orange juice (pH around 2.5 to 3.5)

  • Kombucha (pH around 2.5 to 3.5)

  • Sparkling water and flavored seltzers (often pH around 3 to 4)

  • Wine, especially white and sparkling

  • Sports drinks and citrus energy drinks

  • Vinegar dressings, pickled foods, hot sauces

Yes, and this is where it matters to get a real look.

Early enamel cavities often react to acid before they react to cold. The decay hasn't reached the pulp yet, so temperature doesn't reach the nerve, but acid can slip through the porous, softened enamel and hit the dentin underneath. Catching a lesion at this stage is worth it. According to ADA and Cochrane review guidance, early enamel caries can often be remineralized with fluoride before they progress to needing a filling.

Hairline cracks and craze lines do something similar. The crack itself is invisible on a normal X-ray, but the opening acts like a highway for acid straight to the dentin. Old fillings with tiny gaps at the margin (called micro-leakage) can behave the same way. A quick zap when acid hits, then nothing.

What can I do at home tonight?

A few small changes help most patients feel better within a week or two.

  • Rinse with plain water right after anything sour or fizzy. It brings the pH back up fast.

  • Wait 30 minutes before brushing after acidic foods or drinks. The ADA notes that softened enamel is more easily abraded by a toothbrush, so brushing right after can actually speed up wear.

  • Use a straw for kombucha, citrus water, sports drinks, and seltzers. It routes the liquid past most of your teeth.

  • Switch to a sensitivity toothpaste with stannous fluoride or nano-hydroxyapatite. Give it two weeks of twice-daily use before judging.

  • Pause the whitening toothpaste for now. Whitening formulas are often more abrasive and can worsen exposed dentin.

Simple as that. If the pain fades over two weeks with these changes and only comes back when you cheat, diet is the main driver. If it doesn't fade, or if one tooth keeps reacting sharper than the others, that's the signal to come in.
